  1. ALASKA RAILROAD --
  2. Riding the state's railroad is one of the best ways to
  3. see Alaska and its wildlife. The 12-hour ride between
  4. Fairbanks & Anchorage may be your best chance to see
  5. mighty Mt. McKinley, and you can't miss Denali Nation-
  6. al Park -- you go right through it. Plus, where else
  7. but Alaska can you drive your vehicle on a railroad
  8. car, then ride through two tunnels to another part of
  9. the state where you board a state ferry for another
  10. portion of the excursion. That treat is available be-
  11. tween Portage (south of Anchorage on Turnagain Arm of
  12. Cook Inlet) and Whittier (on Prince William Sound).
  13. On the Anchorage-Fairbanks run, the Alaska Railroad
  14. still provides "flag-stop" service to Alaskans living
  15. in remote areas along the route, or for hunters and
  16. anglers who need access to Alaska's backcountry. Res-
  17. ervations are recommended, especially in summer, but
  18. seats are usually available if you get to the depot
  19. early. Children under five ride free; children ages
  20. 5 to 12 ride at half adult fare. For complete schedule
